AI Essentials for Tech Executives

The Noise Problem#

As an executive, you're bombarded with articles and advice on building AI products. Every vendor promises transformation. Every consultant has a framework. But most of it is noise.

What Actually Matters#

After helping dozens of companies implement AI, here's what we've learned:

Process Over Tools#

The companies that succeed with AI aren't the ones with the fanciest models. They're the ones with clear processes for:

  • Identifying real problems — Not every problem needs AI
  • Measuring success — Define metrics before you build
  • Iterating quickly — Start small, prove value, then scale

The Build vs. Buy Decision#

Most companies should start by buying. Custom AI solutions are expensive and risky. Off-the-shelf tools have gotten remarkably good. Build custom only when you have a genuine competitive advantage in your data or domain.

Team Structure#

You don't need a team of PhD researchers. You need:

  • Engineers who understand your product
  • A clear product owner who defines success
  • Access to domain experts who can validate outputs

The Executive Checklist#

  1. Start with the business problem, not the technology
  2. Define success metrics before writing any code
  3. Budget for iteration — the first version is never the final one
  4. Invest in data quality over model sophistication
  5. Plan for the human-in-the-loop — AI augments, it doesn't replace
